Becoming a Christian
In a world of uncertainty, God promises us in His Word that we can KNOW that we have a home in Heaven with Him.
"These things have I written unto believe on the name of the Son of God, that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God." - 1 John 5:13
But how can we KNOW the way?
"Thomas saith unto Him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest, and how we know the way? Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." John 14:5-6
Jesus IS the way. The ONLY way. Here are some things He wants us to understand:
1) WE ARE ALL SINNERS.
"For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God." - Romans 3:23. God and His law are holy and perfect, and we all have broken God's law. This includes me and you.
The "law" means ANY commandment of God. Have you ever lied, or stolen anything? Have you ever blasphemed God, or lusted after someone in your heart? Have you ever coveted? James 2:10 says, "For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all."
2) OUR SIN DESERVES A WAGE.
"For the wages of sin is death..." - Romans 6:23a
"And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire." - Revelation 20:14
God is a just God, and He will not allow sin to go unpunished, or else He would cease to be just. Just as a fair judge would not allow the guilty to go unpunished, neither does God.
3) IN HIS LOVE, GOD HAS PROVIDED SALVATION FOR US.
"But God commendeth His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." - Romans 5:8
This is the good news of Jesus Christ for us! Jesus (the Son of God, God in the flesh) suffered on the cross and died, was buried, and rose again. Jesus (the just) shed His blood for us (the unjust) so that we could be saved.
4) YOU CAN BE SAVED TODAY.
"For by grace are ye saved through faith, and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God, not of works, lest any man should boast." - Ephesians 2:8-9
There is nothing you can do to pay the penalty for your sin. Being good does not pay the penalty. Getting baptized does not pay the penalty. Going to church does not pay the penalty. Jesus has paid it ALL.
You must humbly come to Christ and put all your faith and trust in Him and Him alone.
"For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved." - Romans 10:13
"God so loved the world that He sent His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved." - John 3:16-17
WOULD YOU REPENT AND CALL ON HIM TODAY?
It does not matter what words you say, as long as you are truly believing, trusting, and accepting Christ's sacrifice for your sins. However, if you would like to, you could pray something like this:
"Dear God, I know that I am a sinner, I know that I have broken your law, and have come short of your Glory. I know that because of this, I am deserving to perish eternally in Hell. I do believe that Jesus died for me to pay that penalty, that He was buried and rose again as a substitute for me. Please save me. I am trusting in the blood of your Son right now. I accept His sacrifice for my sin. Help me now to live for you! In Jesus' name, Amen!"
